| Title: | MOEDERTJIE |
| Artist/Stars: | Stefanie Faure, Jan-Plaat Stultjies, Pierre de Wet |
| Contents: | Together with the film Sarie Marais, Moedertjie occupies a unique niche in South African cinema history. The two were the first South African films with sound, and were premiered at the gala opening of the Capitol Theatre in Pretoria in 1931. Moedertjie was adapted from the play In die Wagkamer (In the Waiting Room) by JFW Grosskopf, and based on events in 1914, when large numbers of young Afrikaners migrated from rural areas to towns and cities in search of a better life. Tante Koester (Moedertjie) and her husband travel by train to Maraisburg to look for their only son who hasn’t written home for two years. Arriving after dark, they spend the night in the station’s waiting room – meeting other strangers, each with their own tales of loss and sorrow. All find what they seek: a child, a lost love, freedom and acceptance – but not in the way that they wished.
