| Contents: | Set in the early 1970s, this is a poignant examination of the relationship between a poor widower and his 17-year-old daughter. She is dreaming of her Matric dance, the handsome boy in her class and a long white gown. But there’s no money for a fancy dress, so Chrissie asks her father for just one thing: a white rose, which she’ll pin to one of her old dresses.
But he has other plans. He sells his beloved pigeons, talks his cranky sister-in-law into selling him a piece of red cloth, and asks the local seamstress to make a dress that “must look like Christmas”. Meanwhile, Chrissie’s kindly teacher is also making her a dress: a white number, as elegant as any Parisian creation. Chrissie is delighted, but what will happen on the big night, when she has not one, but two dresses to wear, and father’s feelings to take into account?
