| Title: | SARIE MARAIS |
| Artist/Stars: | Johann Nell, Helen Faul, Anna Cloete |
| Contents: | Together with the film Moedertjie, Sarie Marais occupies a unique niche in South African cinema history. The two were the first South African films with sound, and were premiered at the gala opening of the Capitol Theatre in Pretoria in 1931. André de Villiers’s original screenplay is based on the famous Afrikaans folk song Sarie Marais. Set in the 1880s, the story opens when Johan de Villiers inherits the family farm and asks for childhood sweetheart Sarie Marais’s hand in marriage. Sarie’s uncle Oom Hendrik advises against it. Furthermore, he regards Johan as a coward because the young man does not believe the Boers should be at war with their new British masters. When the two argue about a shotgun, Oom Hendrik is killed by an accidental discharge. Johan rushes to the front to replace the old man but he never returns as a hero to Sarie because he is killed in crossfire.
